Pervez Musharraf (born 11 August 1943) is a retired four-star general and former Pakistani politician who became the country’s ninth president after a successful military takeover of the federal government in 1999.
He served as president from 2001 to 2008, when he resigned in order to escape impeachment. Musharraf was born in Delhi during the British Raj and raised in Karachi and Istanbul.
He attended Forman Christian College in Lahore and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom, where he studied mathematics.
Musharraf graduated from the Pakistan Military Academy in 1961 and joined the Pakistan Army in 1964, where he participated actively in the Afghan civil war.
